This year we hosted a Year 11 work experience student from Crispin School, Street in Somerset. During his time with us, Calab had his first experience of a business environment.

The experience included an introduction to the role of a Surveyor through the RICS ‘exploring careers in surveying’ lesson plan. He was also able to join in on practice and design team meetings and visit live construction sites. Calab learned how to read and electronically measure drawings and prepare estimates, along with other interactive tasks carried out as part of a team. Overall, the aim was to give him a taste of what working on projects is like.

We have been very impressed with Calab’s enthusiasm and diligence. He brought a youthful clarity of vision to the team, especially around the ‘basics of business’ task. This involved setting up a mock company, considering his charges and drafting an invoice for his services during his time with us. Through all of this, he learned a new equation to apply in future: Effort + Enterprise = Reward.

We think it’s important to give young people visibility of roles and opportunities in the construction industry. Should you, or someone you know be interested in joining us for a future work experience opportunity, please get in touch with the team.
